My beef with Forever 21 dresses

They're soooo cute...but most of them are so poorly made. At least with my experience! I seem to purchase the dresses that were only good for trying on or for one wear, before coming apart. I go through "F you, Forever 21, we're over" stints every few months, with the longest strike lasting about a decade. I just keep justifying the unraveling of stitching and coming-off-in-my-fingers buttons by their $22 tags, i.e. you get what you pay for, and sorry, but I shouldn't be required to sew every time I wear one of their dresses. I believe 100% in quality over quantity (and that includes inexpensive purchases for quality items just the same), but all beef aside, F21 really works for gals on a budget (myself included). And I do realize that not everything in there rips, tears, and falls apart on its first outing; I have several dresses that are still holding up fine. It's just a hit or miss for me and this latest polka dotted beauty did a number that had me fuming. I put it on to go out for lunch, feeling all cute and whatnot. I'm not even out the door and a button falls off. *nostril flare* I put the button aside, glancing over myself in the mirror (sorry for mirror pictures by the way!) to see if I can still go on. My bra wasn't exposed, there was no open gap - cool. I hop in my car and cruise along the highway when I notice that it's gaping. I can see my cleav'. Another button had come off - and let's not even think for a second that my "girls" could have popped it off. I wish. But that's not even a possibility. I had to reroute to home because my attire was no longer appropriate for the public eye. This was the third time this happened to me on a first time wear, and going out to eat no less. Such a bummer. For now, I'm searching for a sewing tutorial vid on Youtube. What a drag.
Lots of my friends shop religiously at Forever 21. I was wondering if y'all have similar wardrobe malfunctions with a decent amount of your purchases? Dana, I know you've had a good rip in the pants, haha (sorry ;)).
I hope y'all are having a lovely Sunday. Wish me luck on my first sewing adventure since boot camp in '02!
P.s. I know buttons are easy, but these aren't those four-little-holes-in-the-circle type buttons. These have a little loop underneath the shell...aka looks like a pain in the ass.

  1. Haha. Oh no!! That really sucks. Good luck learning to sew. I have no clue what I am doing when it comes to sewing - I just loop through whatever a billion times and make a lot of knots and hope for the best. I probably should watch a youtube vid or two. That dress was so cute too. My F21 stuff doesn't last too long either. I am trying to resist shopping there because I want my clothes to last.

Your hair looks GREAT btw :]

    1. I actually was searching for the video and got caught up doing something else and forgot to come back to this. hahaha typical me. I've asked a couple friends that say they can "sort of sew" and none wanted to do these stupid buttons! LOL Oh well, I'll pay someone at a tailor place the next time I'm out and about. But yeah, anytime I've sewn, I've done the same things as you!!! :)
That was my last straw with F21. I always do a good job of not walking in there so as not to be tempted by their cute-but-nonfunctional things, but a few weeks ago I failed and bought like three dresses. No more. I'm really done. I'll stick with good stores like ModCloth, Ruche, Asos, etc.
      Thanks, Allison!

  2. Oh Roni you look great with this dress, I use to shop F21 when I lived in the states, 7 years ago but I never had such a problem. I guess that their quality changed over the time. Booo them!

    1. Seven years ago I was still on strike with them so I must've missed their "good quality" phase. haha Thanks, Francesca darling!

  3. Oh dang I hate that - when you think you've got a bargain and then realise that the reason it was so cheap was because, well, it's cheap. Although, this dress is super cute - maybe worth a lost button or two? :)

    1. You're so right! That's what I always told myself about this store but got sucked in a few weeks ago by pretty patterns and cute collars. No more! :)

  6. i finally talked myself out of buying things from f21, and saving up for something that will last longer. in the end, i think it's worth it! if it's any consolation, though, that dress is super cute!

    1. Yeah, my primary sources for shopping are at wonderful online stores that I've never had any problems with as far as quality so I'll just stick with those places. My husband always says he'd rather me spend $100 on my dresses than to go into a F21 and spent $100 on 5 of their dresses that will not be be functional after a day.
      Thank you, Danielle! :)

  7. Yep, that's been my problem about half the time. I do have dresses that are still going strong, but tank tops are just a joke from there. Literally a joke. They unravel as you are wearing them hahaha!

  8. Ummmm...Yeeeeaahhh....There are a few more other things that annoy me about F21 like that fact that I always feel anxious when I'm in the store. It's so big with soooo many different sections, I tend not to enjoy my shopping experience while there. Lately, I've gone online to find what I want from them. I've had a few issues with poor quality as well. Any who, ya look so fab! I am LOVING your hair like this and the polka dot dress is super cute!

    1. I get that anxious feeling as well. So much stuff! It's like your head doesn't know which way to look and your legs don't know which direction to start walking. haha
Thanks for the sweet words, Trice! I don't know why everyone is gaga over my hair. I do the same thing I always do to it when it's straightened, but I appreciate it! I think it's just cause I've been wearing my hair in a bun for about a month. hahah!

  9. Roni you look really nice on that dress, is true that F21 are not high quality I lived over the Us for almost a year and I was completely in love with American Eagle bit never got anything from F21 because it looks really bad stuff.
    Good luck with Booths sewing.
